Darien, GA Real Estate, Darien Area and Community Information
Darien, Georgia, is a coastal community with about 2,000 residents located at the mouth of the Altamaha River. This McIntosh County city is not far from Brunswick and the Golden Isles. Darien was originally named New Inverness, and it has the distinction of being one of the earliest planned communities in the state.
The oldest fort in what is today the state of Georgia was built in 1721 by the English. Fort King George was built near today's Darien. After repeated attacks by the Spanish, the fort was abandoned in 1727. What is today Darien was founded in 1736 by Scottish Highlanders that were assigned to protect the Georgian frontier. A total of 177 men, women and children arrived on the "Prince of Wales" to found the community. Fort Frederica was started in the same year on nearby St. Simons Island.
The town was largely destroyed during the Civil War, and it was promptly rebuilt in the years thereafter. By the early 20th century, Darien had become one of the major ports for shipping lumber in the Southeast. When the timber in the area was depleted, townsfolk turned to shrimping and fishing to earn a living.
